Jules’ journey to unlock London’s potential over 26 miles at the Virgin Money London Marathon
I decided to take on the marathon because…
I started running early last year and already have a few shorter races under my belt. I asked about any fundraising events to help Only Connect that involved running and really didn’t expect to be told a marathon place was on offer. I see a marathon as the ultimate running challenge so for me it was a no-brainer to sign up.
Only Connect has given me the chance to fulfil one of my lifetime ambitions. These kind of opportunities come around rarely so I’m more than happy to show my gratitude by working as hard as I can to raise as much money as possible.
My story…
The best part has been all the extra activities I’ve been recommended to do to help along the way, from cycling to massages to aerial yoga.
The hardest part of doing all this has been the time commitment. I’ve got a (nearly) one year old at home so my partner has been massively supportive by doing a lot of extra work to look after the little one, look after the house, and look after me!
What is your top fundraising tip and your favourite running song?
My top fundraising tip is to keep reminding people about what you’re doing. There will be a lot of people who intend to sponsor you but simply forgot to do so. A gentle reminder (particularly after payday!) will nudge their memory and keep the donations rolling in.
I like to concentrate on something when I’m running so that I forget about the sore legs and feet. My favourite is stand-up comedy, with Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor helping me to literally laugh out loud while I’m hitting the road.
Jules will be running the 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon for Only Connect on 26th April. To help his fundraising efforts sponsor Jules here.
